Aleyda Flores, ’16, and her family emigrated to the U.S. from Honduras in 2010, two years before she enrolled at Indiana State University to study computer engineering technology.

“After I visited campus, I knew right away that this place, ISU, was calling my name,” Flores said. “I loved the campus environment, the facilities and how the school was driven to volunteer service. The faculty and staff were so friendly, too.”

Then, there were the opportunities. Flores wasted no time getting involved in every aspect of student life within the College of Technology. She served as vice president of Females in Technology, was director of finance/inventory for the Technology Student Leadership Council and was a technology career advocate for the college. Flores also traveled to Taiwan as part of a short-term study abroad experience.

“ISU was easy for me to adjust because the average size and the name of the buildings were easy to remember,” she said. “Most importantly, ISU offers excellent education programs, professional and peers for college life.”

Opportunities, like a computer programming specialist internship in New York, provided Flores with ample experience to succeed at her career as a project specialist for Watchfire Signs – a billboard manufacturing company in Danville, Ill.

“My role as project specialist is to support proprietary billboard operation software, account management and users,” she said. “I also provide extensive technical assistance in Spanish and English during installation and going forward for all LED signs.”

It’s a budding career made possible because of the foundation that Flores created as a student at Indiana State.

“There are so many different opportunities (at Indiana State),” she said. “It was through a faculty member that I got a great internship that lead to my current job, which I love.”
